Sore
Jun/090
Saturday I helped a fellow costumer move out of his mom’s place into his brand new home. His fiance and him purchased the house up in Powell, OH shortly after announcing their engagement.
I knew that I’d be in for some work, but you never really remember how much the muscles ache days later. The move went pretty well though. We were able to load up most of his stuff within about 3 hours.
We stopped for lunch on the way over to Powell. I think the worst part about the move is mainly the distance between the two points. His mother lives all the way out in Granville, which makes for a loooong drive down 161 through farm country.
When we arrived in Powell it took just about the same amount of time to unload, but we took a few more breaks in between boxes. Unfortunately after dropping off the Uhaul, we still had to take another trip back to Granville to drop everyone off at their cars and then another trip from Granville to Westerville just for me to get home.
Didn’t feel it as much Saturday night, but Sunday all day and today this morning I can feel the dull ache of worn muscles. It’s not too bad, so thankfully I didn’t strain or pull anything. It’s just a reminder that will take a few days to go away.

Michael Jackson Dead?
Jun/090
Reports are quickly spreading the net that Michael Jackson died this afternoon after suffering a cardiac arrest and was rushed to an LA hospital. It’s hard to tell of the reports are in-fact real, as they all seem to be based off the same speculative information of reports coming in from a 911 call center.
CNN already has an article up as well:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Music/06/25/michael.jackson/index.html
EDIT: Just minutes ago, CNN has updated their page to note that Michael is in a COMA, not dead.
EDIT: Now CNN changing their article AGAIN stating he is now dead. They are all rushing to try to actually confirm all of this though, as no one is allowed in or out of the hospital with info.
EDIT: Twitter has exploded.

Mmm…Bacon
Jun/091
I read in the paper today that PETA is holding a demonstration on the lawn of the Columbus Statehouse against pork farms on July 9th, 2009. They requested a few things from the statehouse, some were approved, one major one denied.
Ability to bring hogs in narrow metal crates, APPROVED.
Ability to set up an audio broadcast station playing screams of piglets, APPROVED.
Ability to set up a video booth showing “undercover” footage from pork farms, APPROVED.
Ability to bring gallons of hog urine, manure, and blood and a series of fans to “waft” the smell around the statehouse lawn, DENIED.
Seriously? That’s just messed up. Also…I thought PETA was for ethical treatment of animals? Why are they penning up those hogs in narrow metal crates? Isn’t that un-ethical? *GASP!*
Anybody for joining me downtown with boxes of free ham and bacon samples to pass out? I think it’ll be a great time.
Ugh…Upgrading
Jun/093
This is why I don’t upgrade at all. May or may not have noticed that the blog disappeared last night. Thought it was a goner. Luckily I had made a backup of the SQL databases…just had no idea how to reinstall them. You see, the new Worpress changed their table structure, so even backing it up and restoring it won’t work. I had to figure out how to push some of the data in manually.
Right now I pushed the posts back to the site. Later I will work on the comments. Then comes rebuilding the theme. Guess it’s time for a new one.
EDIT: Ok, so the story goes that I decided last night to upgrade to Wordpress 2.8. I was originally running 2.1. There were tons of bugfixes and security holes patched. It seemed easy enough, just load the files and run the upgrade script.
Problem was, it hosed up and I couldn’t access the admin panel. That is a bad thing as anyone who uses Wordpress knows that’s how you control the blog software. Without access to it I’m just looking at a garbled page with no way to fix it.
At that point I made the database backup, as the tables were still intact. I spent a better part of the night trying furiously to gain access to my admin panel. I ended up doing a fresh install of Wordpress in a new folder, just in case.
Turns out I needed it. At about 11pm I was convinced that I would have to abandon my old blog and start a new one. The old blog was still there, but numerous errors caused it to look pretty hideous.
This morning I was able to push all of the posts back into the new database. I also re-activated my Project Wonderful ads, so as not to lose revinue from them. They are back in working order now.
The long process of rebuilding/rennovating my blog has begun…
Kindergarten Graduation
Jun/090
Well, it’s been a few weeks since the actual graduation itself, but I finally dumped all the photos from the ceremony onto the photo gallery. Figured I would make a quick post about it to keep folks informed. Gabby, our oldest, graduated from kindergarten this year and finished off the year with a reading level of an almost-second grader. We are very proud of her and wish her many more years of great school.

Tattoo
Jun/090
So, for a few years now I have been tossing around the idea of getting a tattoo. I know that it’s recommended that you think about what you want long and hard…because it’s permanant. Because of that I had limited myself to only a few designs. I didn’t want to get stuck with some “fad” tattoo that was going to have no meaning later on.
The logo as seen on my armor plate.
Finally a few months ago I settled on my design. I have been working with Mandalorian costuming and the Mandalorian Mercs costume club for just over 2 years. From when my costume was first finished to now we have grown to over 200 members world-wide.
Close-up of the logo that was sent to the artist as reference.
One of the finishing touches I put on my armor was a Mandalorian “death’s head” skull. Originally, little was written in SW lore about what it represented other than Boba Fett had worn it on his shoulder armor. But the current concept is that it represents one of the most feared and strongest of the original Mandalorian warriors. He was killed in a civil war between the Mandalorians and his followers placed the emblem on their armor to honor him.
The artist’s reference images and transfer. Notice the transfer duplicated the minor paint details.
Jump to the real world and the emblem is most widely known as “Mando skull” or “Mythosaur skull” and basically represents Mandalorians as a whole. Slap it on a set of armor and it’s instantly recognized as Mando.
The tattoing begins. It really didn’t hurt that much at all.
I had placed it on my armor as a tribute to my friend Brian aka Jun Garros, as his advice and tips were very helpful in creating my first set of armor. He wore a skull on his chest armor in the same location. Instead of using the basic skull that has been floating around the net, I went one step further and chose a skull design that was unique. My skull design, while it looks the same as the others…up close you can tell is slightly different. It was based off of someone’s hand-carved ink stamp of the skull. I had traced the design from a photo and used it on my armor. To this day, myself and my wife are most likely the only ones with this unique version of the skull.
The finished product. Logo was duplicated exactly and turned out great.
The tattoo wasn’t very painful at all and the artist was very professional and very sanitary. It only took about 30-40 minutes and I was given everything I needed to care for the tattoo for the first few days. I am very proud of my tattoo and it’s representation of me and my volunteer time. The friends I have made through this costuming adventure are very close to me.

AdventureCon 2009
Jun/091
Well, this year’s AdventureCon came and went again. Since I first attended in 2007 with a few friends it has been a “must go” event each year. We ended up with over 20 Mando costumers there and had a GREAT time.
Amy went with me this year and we got a hotel room for just us. That was a definite plus this year. Instead of having to step over snoring bodies on the floor, I was able to lounge around in my room and enjoy the time we had there.
We suited up at 10am on Saturday for the majority of the day. Didn’t make it as long as the first year or last year…I suited down about 3pm. We ran a “jail and bail” event all day long which really worked out for our “bounty hunter” personas and raised about $120 for our group’s Christmas charity fund. Everyone who participated had fun doing it.
Most of the weekend was hanging out with friends that we don’t get to see but once a year and eating good food. On Sunday us “leftover folks” hit up a great pizza place and then headed back to the hotel and all watched Watchmen on the pay-per-view.
Here are some photos from the event:

Binder Cuffs Project
Jun/090
With AdventureCon fast approaching this year (June 12-14) our costuming group is planning on having a “jail and bail” fundraiser at the convention. Basically how it works is that folks will come up to our table and place a “bounty” on their friends’ heads. They give us a description of the friend and the set bail amount. We go off to find their friend on the convention floor and “arrest” them and bring them back to our jail (which was made of PVC pipe by our group leader).
In thinking about this I realized that I needed to create a set of binder cuffs (handcuffs in the Star Wars world) to use during this. There are tons of great resources out on the net if you do a quick Google search on the subject. I glanced at a few and came up with the components I needed. I’m pretty much winging the overall design as I really have no need to create a screen-accurate piece.
So far I have attched the hinges onto both cuffs, bolted them together, and I have attached the magnets permanantly to one cuff. I still need to attach the magnets to the second cuff and add a few decorative pieces to the cuff ring before painting. Then I need to add some padding inside the ring for a snug fit.
These also work great for photo ops because people love to get pictures with us capturing their friend or shooting their friend. Just pull these out, slap them on their wrists and take a photo.

Marcon 44
May/090

This weekend I attended my first Marcon. Marcon stands for Mutliple Alternate Realities Convention. Basically, it’s their way of saying an “anything goes” convention. This year’s theme was “British Invasion” so there were quite a few Dr. Who costumers and other costumes from British sci-fi and TV. There were still quite a few of the regulars…Star Trek, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and of course…anime.

This being my first year, I didn’t quite know what to expect…but one thing I did notice was that you could tell who had been to Marcon years past and who hadn’t. Those who had been walked around with a “purposeful” presence throughout the con. They knew when and where all the after-con parties were, and they talked about it at great lengths.

I kind of cheated on the con as I didn’t buy a pass to get in. The con is located within a few floors of the Hyatt hotel and convention center. The passes only granted you access to the panels, dances, and costume contests…otherwise one was free to roam around the halls and even in the dealer room with no pass. That was pretty cool because I wasn’t ready to drop $40-50 on a convention that I had never been to before. I had been tipped off by Mark that you didn’t need the badges last year…so that definitely helped.

We arrived on Friday night about 6-7pm and suited up in the parking lot. It was good to have such a large group from the Rancor Clan together at one time. I had gotten so used to only doing events with Mark and Travis that it was beginning to get mundane. At this event we had myself, Mark, Travis, Darryl, Mike, Scott (Mike’s son), and a new guy from KY (forgot his real name). We posed for a few pics and roamed around the halls for the night. We even got to star as backup dancers for the lovely Mandala and her song “Summer Song”. We trooped for a few hours, then armored down and hit up the food court for some dinner. We walked back up to the convention for a bit after eating to see if there were any new costumed folks parading around…but ended up leaving shortly before midnight.

Saturday was the “easy day” costume-wise for me. I donned my Jedi costume with some of Amy’s Jedi parts and joined Travis in Jedi gear for the day. Mike wore his Mandalorian costume again for a few hours and Mark wore his Biker Scout costume. Jedi aren’t notoriously known for getting a lot of pictures taken of them for some reason…but I got a decent amount of picture requests. Walking around in Jedi gear is a heck of a lot more comfortable and I was able to take a few photos throughout the day of other costumers.

Overall, the con was pretty fun, but I definitely felt the “odd man out” because I didn’t know anyone who was having parties, and didn’t really want to attend any parties. Most likely won’t be going to Marcon ever again, as we’re always with family on Memorial weekend.
More photos here.
